Effect of Intravenous Lorazepam Administration during Anticonvulsant Drug Switch

Abstract
Many anticonvulsant drugs are potentially toxic and long-term use of them often results in serious adverse reactions. If such a serious situation occurs, the physician should consider switching anticonvulsant drug from the one being used to another.
The authors studied the effect of intravenous lorazepam for the prevention of seizures or even status epilepticus that might occur during anticonvulsant drug switch. Lorazepam prevented the occurrence of seizures in fourteen (88%) of the sixteen patients, showed no side effect such as depressant action on respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Duration of the action of intravenous lorazepam lasted eight or more hours.
